Microsoft launches the new Zuneposted on October 03, 2007 02:53:03 am

The new Zune players have finally been announced by Microsoft. In a nutshell, users can now buy DRM-free songs from the Zune Store (DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, an anti piracy measure). Without DRM, the songs are compatible with any music player.
There’s also the option of “renting music” (my personal favorite) by buying an “unlimited pass” that lets you download as many songs as you want. I take it that these ones are DRM-protected.
The Wireless sync over WiFi seems like an interesting option, particularly since the new Zune can also sync your TV Shows from Windows Media Center… nice move. It is really as good as it sounds?

Rock My Teeth with an iPodposted on October 03, 2007 02:00:20 am

Mike Williams' new "Rock My Teeth" system requires an iPod to work its wonder of stripping your coffee-stained teeth of their dirt, resulting in pearly whites after prolonged use. You first need to attach peroxide-loaded whitening strips to both top and bottom teeth (they're self-adhesive and dissolving so no worries about having plastic left over in your mouth after each treatment), followed by placing a custom mouthpiece between your teeth and hooking it up to an iPod (or other music source for that matter). Crank up the volume and see the magic work - it uses bone conduction of your jawbone to enhance the whitening process in a quick and painless manner. According to Williams, these strips will make you half a dozen shades whiter within a week. Definitely not something to be used in public but in the innermost recesses of your home. The entire kit retails for $50 and includes a mouthpiece, cable, and 50 of the whitening strips.

Battery lasts for 30 yearsposted on October 03, 2007 01:59:20 am
Ever wished your laptop battery would never run out? Well that could be a very real possibility in the near future with a new betavoltaic power cell battery which could last for up to 30 years on a single charge. Betavoltaics actually generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material, using beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This will make the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell where electrons scatter out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and into the circuit creating a usable electric current. These cells are fully inert and non-toxic when they run out of juice, so no worries about any environmental fallouts. I'd take this piece of news with a pinch of salt - after all, such a battery will probably be obsolete before its shelf life runs out.

iPhone ripoff runs on cloned Vistaposted on October 03, 2007 01:58:28 am
Talk about trying to bring together the best of both worlds - this cloned iPhone wannabe appears to be running Windows Vista at first glance - we all know that is but a sorry fantasy. Features include a 3.2" 260k QVGA touchscreen display, a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo speakers with 3D sound, and a microSD memory card slot all crammed into a body that measures 114mm × 60mm x 16 mm while weighing 103 grams. No idea on pricing, but one thing's for sure - this is a product that hails from China.

Throat camera gives new insightposted on October 03, 2007 01:57:41 am
Justin Quinnell is crazy enough to come up with a homebrew solution of a throat camera, snapping photos that boast an extremely unorthodox angle which he is currently putting up for sale as art. Pretty interesting, but I suppose this will appeal to only a certain demographic as watching from the inside of somebody's mouth isn't exactly very tasteful.

New Zune accessories work just fineposted on October 03, 2007 01:56:26 am

More on the Zune 2Gposted on October 03, 2007 01:55:39 am
Microsoft head honcho Bill Gates unveiled the new Zune portable media players, software, and online store as well as the new Zune Social beta online community Web site. The new Zune Pad appears on these refreshed Zunes, boasting an innovative touch-sensitive button for navigating on the device, as well as wireless sync, Windows Media Center TV on the go, and new codec support. It is also interesting to note that Microsoft has not forgotten about their 1G Zune owners, making available all the new Zune's features on the old one as well without having to fork out a cent. Apple could take a leaf out of Microsoft's book by seeing how this software company takes care of its customers. All the original Zune accessories will also work just fine with the new Zunes, whether they are flash-based or not.

Nintendo helps keep earth greenposted on October 03, 2007 01:54:41 am
Nintendo aims to increase environmental awareness among gamers by introducing Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol for the DS platform as well as offering 500 tree seedlings to kids who want to spruce up their neighborhoods. The game itself is based on the growing environmental movement, letting players play the role of a cute little robot. Your task would be to clean up a park by planting flowers, building park equipment and defeat toxic enemies known as Smoglings. You'll be able to carry out actions like watering plants, squirting enemies or riding a bike. Each good deed results in Happy Points that power him. Even the modes of transportation inside the game are environmentally friendly to help drive the message home. Looks like Nintendo has broken new ground once again with Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol, being on of the first environmentally themed video game adventures inthe world. You can get your tree seedling by registering at http://www.Chibi-Robo.com between now and Nov. 9.

DoCoMo's Wellness concept phone is something different that you won't find on the market - it supposedly helps raise the bar of health awareness where its user is concerned, although the lack of tact in doing so could cause many people to bin this thing. It has a built-in pedometer that uploads your workout regime online, measuring your body's fat content while its at it. Not only that, there is the all important bad breath meter that comes in handy just before that big date of yours - no longer do you need to subject your siblings to endure your skunk breath prior to popping a mint.

Sounds like the standard keypad will evolve into this sometime down the road. Hopefully there will be some sort of tactile feedback so that you know what you're pressing. One thing's for sure though - this will definitely be more power efficient than dual screen touchscreen-enabled smartphones that are flooding the market these days.

What you see above is the result of such an extravagant imagination, done up by Alexander Amosu. This exclusive limited edition diamond Nokia N95 8GB will be limited to just 10 in the whole wide world, and each handset is adorned with 18 carat solid white gold with 325 diamonds, boasting a total diamond weight of 3.30 carats. Snooze concept phoneposted on October 03, 2007 12:03:58 am
The Snooze concept phone marries a slick white cellphone and an alarm clock of the same color. Since most (if not all) handsets these days already come with the all-important alarm clock function, this concept doesn't really make any sense. I suppose the only advantage would be the rather large red LED display located at the base of the handset that looks just like a traditional electronic alarm clock, with the all important "Snooze" word etched at the back to state its intentions. Should this concept actually materialize, it would be more of a novelty than anything else.

Chinese PMP rips off Cingular logoposted on October 02, 2007 11:37:27 pm
Why am I not surprised to find out that this clone iPod nano is manufactured in China? Not only did it rip off the form factor of the 2G iPod nano, it also features the Cingular logo where the pseudo-click wheel should be. What are some of the specifications on this intellectually-pirated device? You get a 1.8" color LCD display as well as support for MP3, WMA, AVI, and JPEG formats. No idea on how much it costs though nor when will it be available, but I'm sure many of you wouldn't be caught dead using one of these. Unless, of course, you're in China and want to have a temporary MP3 player as you traverse across the country.

This concept "nail assist" device will help the cause of those who fall in the latter group - all you need to do is place the nail within the guide tube, position it where the nail is supposed to be, and hammer away. Since the large top makes it harder to miss, you can kiss goodbye to sore thumbs as well. Brilliant concept from Michael Harris - are there any hardware manufacturers out there who are willing to take up this cause?

HP piles on the features when it comes to the Pavilion HDX9095EA Entertainment Notebook. This desktop replacement concept certainly lives up to its name, as our friends at Trusted Reviews found out in their recent test run. They're very happy with the final results, although the only gripe would be the exclusion of a 1080p capable display despite the inclusion of a HD DVD drive. While that might be a deal breaker for some, most people would definitely find the HP Pavilion HDX9095EA Entertainment Notebook to be superior to many other 20" desktop replacements. It retails for £1,599, and with the dual-hinge concept, makes movie viewing on it all the more enjoyable. Might be a little bit pricey for ordinary users out there, but you get pretty much bang for your buck.

Self-tuning guitars to appear soonposted on October 02, 2007 09:58:37 pm
Tuning a guitar can be quite a pain in the ass, but Gibson Guitar could soon relegate that inconvenience to a thing of the past. Dubbed the "Powertune" system, it features piezoelectric sensors that are mounted right below the strings designated for the tuning process. These tuning pickups are connected to digital signal-processing electronics within the guitar body itself.
As the strings are played, the Powertune processor compares their actual frequencies with the desired notes and sends instructions — tighten the string this much, loosen the string by that much — to tuning pegs equipped with strong, tiny servo motors mounted on the back of the guitar's head. Because onstage interference could potentially degrade a wireless signal, the system uses the strings themselves to send the signal.
What do you think of this development? Is it a godsend for folks who use different tunings for different songs, or is it plainly an inexcusable crutch for sloppy players?

This Sanyo offering harnesses the power of the sun to charge its lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn is used to recharge AA batteries. It doesn't matter where the sun is in the sky as the design was created to catch sunlight from various angles, maximizing solar exposure. Are you using any solar-powered products at the moment, and how has it changed your life? This offering from Replug will snap away whenever excess pressure is applied, hence protecting your audio jack "from the rigors of daily use". This nifty little peripheral will work with any 3.5mm auxiliary input, whether on your laptop, PMP, or desktop. Watch out for it sometime this fall at a yet undisclosed price. This would make a great gift for butterfingers who tend to drop their devices or trip on wires that could possibly result in a permanently damaged 3.5mm audio port. While I think the chances of that happening is pretty unlikely, you can never be too safe, can you?

Electric car built from scratchposted on October 02, 2007 09:54:08 pm
Never mind automobile manufacturers who have pumped in millions, billions even, to create an electric car. Daren Luedtke constructed his very own electric car right in his backyard, and his invention is capable of running up to 150 miles based on lead-acid batteries alone. The two electric propulsion systems developed by Luedtke were described as an "electromagnetic transmission" and a "variable speed belt-driven transmission", and will be marketed to automakers by Luedtke's company, LEI Global. The system is pretty noisy by any standards, and comes with a big wheel which spins even when the vehicle is not in motion. Hopefully future revisions will cut down on the noise factor as well as increase the efficiency of the entire engine so that the world doesn't need to go to war any more over oil.

Therapy tiles developed by Henrik Hautop Lund, a robotics and artificial-intelligence professor at the University of Southern Denmark, aims to speed up the healing process of patients through physical routines. Each tile is actually a tiny robotic system that employs neural networks. Each time a tile is stepped upon or pressed, it will give some feedback as to whether there is enough firm pressure or if the user is moving fast enough. Just like a video game, there are single player or multiplayer (maxes out at 4 patients) aspects to it. These therapy tiles can be assembled in any configuration, be they on walls or on the floor for a challenging and intelligent game space. Post A Phone: For When Cellular Technology Failsposted on October 02, 2007 02:45:27 pm
Many Americans are surprised when they hear that landline phones are somewhat of a rarity in Europe since cell phones are so often used as the main telephone source. But what are supposed to do if their cellphones were to die (and when did that happen for the last time, huh)? Post A Phone can mail you an ultra-cheap and simple landline phone made of recycled cardboard, plastic, and cans. The Post A Phone is thin enough to fit through a mail slot, at only 4mm and is shipped directly to you in an A5 envelope. The Post A Phone allows for strict cellphone users to have a last resort device for communication at all times.
Well, it’s interesting, but if someone doesn’t have a landline, how good is it to plug this into the wall plug? An emergency call *might* work, but that’s about it, unless of course, users squat the plug of a neighbor who pays for a landline…

HP Photosmart M547posted on October 02, 2007 01:42:24 pm
HP's newest addition to its M Line of digital cameras, the Photosmart M547 ($109), says to improve on previous models, though initial reviews seem to show that the supposed "enhancements" don't always lead to a more stable and complete camera. The M547 slightly increases its resolution from 6.0 MP to 6.2 MP and now supports larger capacity SD cards, though the camera now comes with a smaller 2.4-inch display. The camera can also record videos, though at a very low resolution of 320x240. For a low priced camera, its not a bad deal, though you might be better off setting it at a lower 4 MP resolution, since the 6 MP might have some color and noise problems.

Sony and Sharp pit OLED against LCD in the battle of thin TVs at CEATECposted on October 02, 2007 01:22:51 pm

As the organizers of CEATEC JAPAN 2007 look forward to an ever growing show with an expected 200,000 visitors to crowd into all the halls at the Makuhari Messe convention center outside of Tokyo, Japanese manufacturers continue to roll out thin flat panel displays. In today’s battle we have two manufacturers pushing two similarly sized displays into the fray, a 12.1 inch model at 2.88 mm width from Sharp and an 11 inch model at 3 mm from Sony. The big difference between the two is Sharp continues to use LCD technology while Sony is pushing OLED. With a long history in LCD, Sharp continues to evangelize the future of the technology. However, Sony is claiming a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with a ship date of Dec. 1, 2007 at a price of 200,000 yen ($1,734 US), while Sharp claims only 2000:1 while not releasing a ship date or pricing.
Still, at CEATEC it’s not only TVs that are getting the slim down treatment. Japanese part manufacturers are also showing parts which could reduce the size of mobile phones. Toshiba is showing off a “Chip Scale Camera Module” (used along with a CMOS image sensor) 64% smaller in volume then the last gen. Kyocera is also displaying a SAW filter with a smaller footprint.
